The "Reset"

The "Reset"

We all need a reset from time to time, we all know that to be true.  A reset is that quality time that gets us out of our routine long enough to clear our head and help us put things into perspective.  But why does it take a reset to remind us that we should have taken the time to step back from our crazy lives?   I’m as guilty of that as the next guy.   My friend's law firm requires a mandatory six-month sabbatical after five or six years at the firm.  Pretty sweet if you ask me.  Anyway, I thought it was all nonsense in my younger days when it was “work, work, work”, only to crash and burn one day and find out I was wrong.

We all have our own way of clearing our head.  I can’t say I’m all that good at stopping the thoughts (I am an artist afterall), but I definitely realize when it happens and wish I did it much more often.  For me, there is no better way to get away from it all than to stand in a trout stream.  This past weekend I was up in North Carolina fishing in a fly fishing tournament.  It was a fundraiser for a local charity and I was humbled by a couple of local high school kids that took the trophy … again.  They literally schooled the rest of us.  Well done boys!

Luckily, the trophy wasnt why most of us were there.   I got to stand in a stream, read the water, pick my fly and cast to the seams and pockets that should hold a fish.   And yes, there was a nap on the rivers edge at some point as well.    Best of all, at the end of the day, I was a happy and felt great!  During the day it seemed the crap I worry about day to day would try to come in my head, only to be bounced out by the sound of the stream and the wonder of why that fish sitting behind that bolder isn’t eating my fly.  One of the beauties of fly fishing is you can never know it all.  Each day on the water is different, so I have to focus, think and concentrate on the moment and as a result all that other life stuff in my head seems to go away for a bit.  I have to say that’s what keeps me coming back.

No matter what it is, we all need a reset from time to time.   When was the last time you stepped back just to take it all in?  Most likely, it's been awhile ..... Go ahead and get out there ......
